According to the Bouches-du-Rhône delegated police prefecture, cited by actu Marseille, the deputy headteacher “was thrown to the ground and beaten by one or more assailants while trying to put out a rubbish-bin fire” (translated), outside the lycée Victor-Hugo, near Saint-Charles station. He has filed a complaint. According to a witness cited by ICI Provence-Alpes TV (France 3), the perpetrators are two adults who are not students (information that the outlet says was confirmed by a second source); they intervened after the deputy headteacher and a young person, from whom he wanted to take an extinguisher, had fallen, and gave him “a big punch” (translated); this witness says that “the rumours of multiple blows stem from the unhealthy anxieties of some” (translated), whereas, according to another source close to the case cited by franceinfo, he received kicks and punches. Severity: his state of health was not specified by the prefecture; according to an unnamed source close to the case, cited by franceinfo (repeated by France 3), a first medical examination gives him a total incapacity for work of nine days.

On Thursday 8 October 2026, during a blockade outside the lycée Victor-Hugo, in the 3rd arrondissement of Marseille, a deputy headteacher is violently assaulted, announces the delegated police prefecture, cited by actu Marseille. According to the services of the delegated police prefect, the situation got out of hand outside the school and he was “thrown to the ground and beaten by one or more assailants while trying to put out a rubbish-bin fire” (translated). The man, whose state of health was not specified at that date, has filed a complaint.

According to the same authorities, the day’s undeclared lycée pupils’ movements outside some schools in the Bouches-du-Rhône gathered 2,500 participants, with 29 arrests and three police officers injured; these figures are not linked to this scene. Actu Marseille recalls that a teacher had been hit and doused with petrol in La Ciotat a few days earlier (separate case).

Follow-up

On 9 October, the Bouches-du-Rhône police prefecture indicates that the deputy headteacher filed a complaint after being “thrown to the ground and beaten” (translated) (franceinfo, France 3). According to several sources close to the case cited by franceinfo, he was struck by several people present outside the lycée, on the sidelines of the mobilisation, while trying to retrieve an extinguisher from the hands of an individual in order to put out a rubbish-bin fire; according to another source close to the case, he received kicks and punches and, “after a first medical examination” (translated), a total incapacity for work of nine days (franceinfo; France 3 repeats it). These sources are not named and no authority has confirmed the figure: the entry retains this ITT (days of total incapacity for work) to fix the severity (“Serious injury”, ITT of more than 8 days), attributing it to its sources.

France 3 Provence-Alpes (ICI Provence-Alpes TV, 9 October) cites a witness, who remains anonymous and describes the scene: the police had left an hour earlier and “the most violent young people appeared” (translated); the deputy headteacher, wanting to take the extinguisher from a young person approaching the lycée, falls with him; “two adults intervene, who, instead of separating and calming the deputy, gave him a big punch” (translated), one of them being much heavier than he is; “all this happened very quickly” (translated). France 3 writes that the witness says they are two adults who are not students, information that its editorial team says it confirmed with a second source. The prefecture, for its part, speaks of “one or more assailants” (translated) and does not specify who they are. The investigation must still determine the precise circumstances of the assault, in particular the number of people implicated (franceinfo); no arrest is reported in the sources read. Classes were held remotely on 9 October at the lycée (France 3).
