On Friday 2 October 2026, in Montpellier, the prefect of the Hérault had had several lycées closed after the previous day’s fires; high-school and university students gathered outside Clemenceau lycée. According to Hérault Tribune, several hundred young people faced about twenty police officers for hours, “particularly rough clashes” (translated) broke out, law enforcement “came under a hail of stones” (translated) and used tear gas. Le Poing adds that young people dressed in black fired firework mortars and threw projectiles before the gas.
Midi Libre (live blog of 02/10 and article of 03/10) distinguishes two groups on avenue Clemenceau: one, outside the lycée, calm and demonstrating; the other, higher up, which fires fireworks and firecrackers, throws eggs and lights a fire; law enforcement charged shortly after 11 a.m. and arrested several young people near Clemenceau park. The prefecture’s tally, repeated by Actu.fr and InfOccitanie, reports 28 arrests in the Hérault including 13 in Montpellier, protesters who were “hooded” and “armed with projectiles and explosive devices”, a “proportionate use of force” by law enforcement and a police officer injured in the hand in Montpellier (translated). The prefecture lists among the reasons for arrest throwing projectiles and violence against security forces, without specifying the cause or place of this injury: it is therefore not attached to this entry.
The same day in Montpellier, a journalist says he was hit by a police officer on a motorbike: see the dedicated entry, whose sources do not link the scene to the Clemenceau gathering.
