On Thursday 1 October 2026 at around 10 a.m., place du 4-Septembre (Marseille, 7th arrondissement), near the Colbert lycée, a woman at a bus stop steps in front of young people who were about to smash a bus shelter with a metal barrier. According to the Marseille public prosecutor, quoted by Actu17, once the group has been pushed back, a minor steps toward her and sprays in the direction of her face a spray which he ignites with a lighter. The scene is filmed; the video shows a jet of flames toward the face (franceinfo).
Orange and M6 Info headline a woman “burned in the face” (translated); neither the public prosecutor’s office nor the other sources read describe a recorded burn or ITT (only CNews, citing a source close to the case, mentions first-degree burns). The person who posted the video stated that the victim had no serious burns, and the initial investigation was for violence with ITT of eight days or less (franceinfo). The victim filed a complaint (police prefecture, quoted by franceinfo). The mention of a minor injury does not rest on a published medical finding: it is based on the investigation opened by the public prosecutor’s office for violence with ITT of eight days or less; no source gives the actual medical condition. On 4 October, La Dépêche, which picks up the account gathered by BFMTV, reports the victim’s words: she felt “a strong heat on [her] face” (translated), was taken care of by firefighters and then treated at a medical centre, and says she does not have “the severity of the images in terms of after-effects on [her] face” (translated); the outlet writes “without after-effects” (translated). The severity retained (minor injury) remains that of a discomfort described by the victim herself.
The suspect, a 15-year-old student, was identified thanks to video surveillance, arrested on Friday 2 October and, according to the public prosecutor’s office, immediately admitted the acts and expressed deep regret (Actu17).
Follow-up
The investigation, initially opened for intentional violence with ITT of eight days or less, with three aggravating circumstances (weapon, group, concealed face), was reclassified: on 4 October, the Marseille public prosecutor’s office referred the matter to an investigating judge for an act of barbarity, a criminal classification, and requested pre-trial detention (Actu17, ICI Provence). The same day, the Marseille prosecutor announces that the minor has been formally placed under investigation for “act of barbarity” (translated) and placed in pre-trial detention “in accordance with the prosecutor’s office’s requests” (translated) (franceinfo, ICI Provence, public prosecutor’s office statement); France 2 (franceinfo) specifies that he faces fifteen years in prison.
