On Thursday 1 October 2026, about twenty lycées in Gironde are blockaded by their students, who denounce their study conditions. In Bordeaux, on the right bank, black smoke is visible early in the morning outside the François-Mauriac lycée and the private Sainte-Marie-Bastide lycée (ICI). The entrance of Mauriac burns: ICI speaks of “considerable damage” and of an entrance “destroyed by a fire” in its headline, Bouger à Bordeaux of the “heaviest” damage of the day (translated). Bus shelters are also destroyed during the mobilisation, and the façade of the Menuts vocational lycée is damaged (ICI). France 3 for its part writes that the façade of the Mauriac lycée was set on fire, with a photo dated 1 October. Bouger à Bordeaux and Seven Radio, which repeat ICI’s account, add that the lycée remains closed at least until the end of the week; the author of this announcement is not named.
Bouger à Bordeaux specifies that the circumstances of the fire and individual responsibilities will have to be established by the investigation and that it would be “premature to attribute this damage to all the mobilised students” (translated). The category “Protesters” therefore designates here the context (a blockade), not established perpetrators.
Follow-up
The Bordeaux public prosecutor’s office announces 20 police custody placements in the urban area and in Langon, Gujan-Mestras and Biganos, including 18 minors aged 13 to 17 and two adults, for the whole day; four minors are brought before a judge (ICI). No source read links these police custody placements to the Mauriac fire.
