On Saturday 17 October 2026, the Union syndicale des lycéens had called, like several organisations, to join that day the “large demonstration” (translated) of the “yellow vests” (translated) (AFP dispatch of 14 October, picked up by Sud Radio). In Paris, 855 people are arrested on this day of mobilisation “against the high cost of living” (translated) (ICI), according to the police prefecture (ICI, franceinfo).
The Paris public prosecutor’s office writes, in a press release cited by franceinfo, that videos taken near the Gare du Nord and circulated on social media on Saturday show a man “injured at the level of the skull” (translated) and bleeding. He was attended to and taken to hospital. He then presented himself in the late afternoon “at the police station […] in order to file a complaint” (translated): “He indicated that it was indeed he who appeared in the videos circulated on social media and attributed illegitimate violence to law enforcement.” (translated) The public prosecutor’s office concludes: “Consequently, an investigation was opened by the Paris public prosecutor’s office for violence by a person holding public authority and the IGPN entrusted with the continuation of the investigations.” (translated)
ICI mentions this investigation in its tally published on 18 October, after the complaint of “a protester injured in the skull, still in Paris this Saturday” (translated). franceinfo counts it as one of the three referrals to the IGPN (police internal affairs) for the day of 17 October, with those of Saint-Étienne and Mulhouse, and describes it as “the serious skull injury of another protester in Paris” (translated). No source read says which act, which weapon or which unit is involved, nor the protester’s condition beyond the injury described by the public prosecutor’s office.
What is missing to confirm
- A second source independent of the public prosecutor’s office press release: franceinfo and ICI, which belong to the same group (Radio France), repeat it, which makes only one source. The videos cited by the public prosecutor’s office have not been found; the act complained of, the unit, the exact place (“near the Gare du Nord” (translated)) and the protester’s condition (incapacity for work, hospitalisation) are given by no source; no source says whether this man is the one in the scene filmed the same day at place de la République.
