On the morning of Friday 2 October 2026, a Métropole de Lyon waste collection truck passes near the La Martinière-Diderot lycée, on the slopes of the Croix-Rousse (Lyon 1st arrondissement), and stops in front of a bin fire lit by protesting students. The worker tries to put it out (LyonMag, JDD).
According to his testimony, several hooded people surround him, hit him and try to prevent him from leaving; the filmed footage shows a man in an orange vest grabbed by hooded people, who manages to break free and reach the truck (LyonMag). He informs his superiors and resumes his shift. The president of the Métropole says that the authority is filing a complaint and remains attentive to the worker’s condition, “notably with regard to possible post-traumatic consequences” (translated) (LyonMag). The JDD, which repeats the information from Le Progrès, quotes a Métropole union representative according to whom he was not injured, and adds that the worker was also accidentally hit by a mortar projectile of which he was not the direct target (with no further detail).
No source identifies a perpetrator or specifies the number of assailants. The day before, the president of the Métropole had written to the authority’s staff that “no intervention, however necessary, justifies exposing yourselves to danger” (translated) (LyonMag).
Follow-up
The Métropole de Lyon has filed a complaint (LyonMag). No arrest, investigation or later health update is reported in the articles read as of 2026-10-05.
What is missing to confirm
- A source independent of Le Progrès: LyonMag and the JDD both repeat the information from Le Progrès (the Métropole announced it to Le Progrès), which makes a single source; Le Progrès itself was not read. The Métropole or the public prosecutor’s office directly, or a video authenticated by a media outlet, would be needed.
- The worker’s state of health as stated by himself or his employer (only a union representative’s statement that he “was not injured” is reported).
